The second generation of the Opel Movano brings a breath of fresh air to the light commercial vehicle market in Europe with innovative technologies and excellent functionality and economy. At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2010, Opel showcases the debut of the chassis and crew versions of the Movano, which now can be configured into more than 300 variants, proving its claim that no job is too big.
The new Movano has expressive, powerful frontal styling that gives it a distinctive appearance. With trademark design elements – such as the trapezoidal-shaped grille, horizontal chrome bar with a redesigned Opel logo and signature crease on the front hood – the Movano is a clear brand carrier.
Engineers and designers paid special attention to the interior design of the cab. The result is a cabin 5.7 centimeters longer than that of the outgoing model and boasts high-quality, durable materials and surfaces, excellent all-around visibility and a host of practical storage compartments. It also features multi-adjustable seats and a height-adjustable steering wheel, ensuring all drivers can find a comfortable driving position.
The new Opel Movano provides an exceptionally wide range of body variants for the light commercial vehicle market, offering a model for nearly every customer-specific utility profile.
The new architecture features a flexible platform design with front- or rear-wheel drive and a gross vehicle weight of up to 4.5 tonnes. The rear-wheel drive 3.5 tonne variants are available with single or dual rear wheels, while the 4.5 tonne variants come standard with dual rear wheels. The range includes panel vans, crew vans, platform, chassis and crew cabs and will shortly be joined by a nine-seat Combi and a minibus with up to 17 seats. This striking LCV is available in four vehicle lengths and three roof heights. Depending on model, its carrying capacities extend to more than four meters in load area length, with a load volume up to 17 cubic meters in the largest version.
The cargo areas of the panel van variants offer best-in-class standards for accessibility, loading ease, standing height and cargo capacity. The vehicle offers a cargo capacity up to 17 cubic meters, with a maximum load area length of 4.4 meters. Gross vehicle weight extends to 4.5 tonnes, with a maximum payload up to 2.5 tonnes depending on body variant. The new Movano is also an excellent towing vehicle, able to pull to 3.0 tonnes. Maximum gross train weight is now 7.5 tonnes.
In addition to load capacity and dimensions, ergonomics and functionality play a vital role in the world of heavy vans. The new Opel Movano is supremely practical for everyday use. FWD models feature low loading sill heights for easy access to the cargo area, while sliding side and rear wing doors with generous openings offer maximum loading and unloading convenience. The rear doors open as standard to 180 degrees, while doors with a 270 degree opening angle are optional.
The standard sliding side door opens to a maximum width of 1270 mm (1050 mm on L1 versions) and with a height of 1780 mm, the opening is large enough to accommodate Euro pallets loaded width-ways. A wide rear door opening of 1580 mm, a height of 1820 mm and an increased load-through width between the wheel arches of 1380 mm combine to ease loading, while straight body sides ensure space efficiency.
The single and crew cabs in the 3.5 t to 4.5 t gross vehicle weight categories are available in three vehicle lengths (L2 / L3 / L4) and, depending on version, can be ordered with front- or rear-wheel drive and either single or dual rear wheels.
The new chassis variants offer ample seating space and the unique ergonomic cab concept familiar from the panel van. In addition to the three front seats, the rear bench in the crew cab accommodates up to four additional passengers, each protected by head restraints and seat belts.
The Movano platform cab is available in two vehicle lengths with two different cab roof heights. The cab-to-body interface panel has been optimized for ease of integration and an extended-length wiring loom for the rear lights can be specified. In addition, a range of specialist electrical connectors is delivered ex-works. These enable easy and secure vehicle wiring and the installation of special conversions for the configuration of custom-made vehicles.
The new Movano can also be ordered ex-works as either a rear- or three-way tipper. These special versions are available in the length variants L2 and L3, with single or crew cabs, and in the weight classes 3.5 tonne, with front-wheel drive, or 3.5 tonne and 4.5 tonne with rear-wheel drive.
Payloads for these versions range from 780 to 1,860 kg. Standard equipment includes a steel load floor with integrated load securing points, cabin protection with ladder holders, as well as aluminum side and tail boards with under-ride protection. The extensive list of options also offers steel side and tail boards and a rear ladder rack.
The dropside variants are also available in the 3.5 tonne to 4.5 tonne gross vehicle weight categories, with front or rear-wheel drive. The single and crew cab versions come in three lengths (L2 / L3 / L4). Depending on the variant, the 2.04-meter wide load floors are available in four lengths that range from 3.17 to 4.47 meters, with payloads varying from 1,050 to 2,130 kg. Standard features include aluminum side and tail boards, cabin protection with a ladder rack and a resin-coated wooden load floor.
The box bodies are constructed on a strong yet lightweight aluminum frame with synthetic panels for a good-looking flush finish and high quality exterior. Two sizes are available offering a 20 m3 or 22 m3 load volume that can accommodate a payload of between 908 kg and 1,935 kg. Standard equipment includes a double-wing rear door with a 270 degree opening angle, an anti-skid floor covering and aluminum lashing rails around the interior. Options include wind deflectors, side doors and a roll-up rear door.
A new family of four-cylinder 2.3 CDTI common-rail diesel engines provides low fuel consumption and emissions. The engines are available in three output levels: 74 kW (100 hp), 92 kW (125 hp) and 107 kW (146 hp). With an optional 105-liter fuel tank (80 liters standard), the operating range is nearly 1,400 kilometers. Great attention has been paid to ensure low fuel consumption is achieved in real world operating conditions, not just according to the EU combined cycle standards.
Despite a lower displacement than the outgoing engine, the 2.3 CDTI delivers higher levels of torque across the board at lower engine speeds, emits less CO2 and enables greater fuel economy. Moreover, the valve train is chain-driven, lowering maintenance costs.
All variants come with a six-speed manual gearbox. An automated Easytronic transmission, which combines high efficiency with the convenience of an automatic, is optionally available for the two more powerful engine variants. All three engines meet Euro 4 emissions standards, and with the optional diesel particulate filter they fulfill Euro 5 standards. An additional, even more economical variant with low CO2 emissions will be added to the program in the second half of 2010.
The new Opel Movano sets new standards for operating economy. It is based on excellent manufacturing and product quality, resulting in high reliability and a long service life, as well as high residual value projections.
The Movano also delivers in terms of low running costs, especially for spare and wear-and-tear parts. The brake and clutch components are particularly durable. Routine maintenance costs are also greatly reduced: an oil change is required only every 40,000 kilometers, or once a year, and the coolant needs to be changed after 160,000 kilometers, compared to 120,000 kilometers previously.
The new Movano boasts the lowest fuel consumption and emissions in its segment, from 7.8 l/100 km and 203 g/km CO2. It offers an overall operating cost reduction of nearly 10 percent compared with the outgoing model. Operating expenses are calculated adding the costs of maintenance, wear-and-tear, insurance, depreciation and fuel for four years or 150,000 kilometers. Maintenance and wear-and-tear costs are 24 percent lower than that of its predecessor. Overall, the vehicle has been engineered for exemplary durability and an above-average service life.
In keeping with the progressive drive train concept, the Opel Movano’s advanced chassis is tuned for agile handling and a comfortable ride, whether fully loaded or empty.
These excellent dynamics are accompanied by a high level of safety: ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) are provided as standard in all models. The electronic stability program (ESP) is also standard for all rear-wheel drive models, and optional with front-wheel drive. Passive safety features include a driver airbag as standard, as well as three-point seat belts with pretensioners and belt-force limiters. Further elements, such as a passenger airbag, seat-mounted side airbags and headlamps with cornering illumination, are optional.
