CarUnity Celebrates First Birthday and Prepares for Further Growth

Rüsselsheim.  Happy birthday, CarUnity (www.carunity.com)! One year after the launch Opel’s car-sharing community has grown strongly. CarUnity already counts over 4,000 registered vehicles.

 

Opel is celebrating CarUnity’s first birthday by targeting further expansion of the car-sharing community. After focusing on the Rhine-Main region in Germany in the start-up phase, Opel is now preparing for additional growth. In Berlin and North-Rhine Westphalia CarUnity will regionally diversify its marketing activities, for example by starting comprehensive cooperations with local media outlets in the metropolitan areas.

 

“Car-sharing the Opel way has convincing advantages”, says Chief Marketing Officer, Tina Müller. “We offer users flexible, affordable mobility or the opportunity to earn money with their car. Society in general and the environment benefit too, because CarUnity uses already existing cars, which conserves resources.”

 

In contrast to competitors, the innovative CarUnity concept is an open car-sharing platform that enables users to offer their own car for rental or to rent a car of their choice, regardless of whether the car is an Opel or a different brand. In addition to private individuals and many Opel employees, more than 60 Opel dealers currently make their cars available to the CarUnity community.

 

“CarUnity’s motto is ’better off sharing’ and there could hardly be a better match for Opel than our innovative peer-to-peer concept”, adds Dr. Jan Wergin, Director Opel Community Carsharing. “Approachability, after all, is one of our brand values.”

 

Expanding the portfolio from automobiles to mobility services is an important element of Opel’s plan for the future. In 2015, in addition to launching CarUnity and the personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar, the carmaker started a successful ride-sharing project at the Rüsselsheim campus.

 

Shaping the future of mobility is also of strategic importance at General Motors, Opel’s parent company. Earlier this year, GM launched a new car-sharing brand called “Maven” and formed a long-term alliance with “Lyft”, the fastest growing ride-share company in the U.S.A.
