  • ADAC Rallye Deutschland attracts 225,000 spectators
  • Opel again celebrates class victory with ADAM R2 at WRC round
  • Racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck praises Opel promotion of young talent
Opel News - Victory drive: New European champions Emil Bergkvist/Joakim Sjöberg came in fourth in their class at the Deutschland Rallye

Rüsselsheim/Trier. Thrilling motor racing, high-performance technology, excited fans, glorious weather – the ADAC Rallye Deutschland around Trier once again offered everything that makes motorsport so fascinating. With the fast and furiously-driving ADAC Opel Rallye Junior team, Opel was in the middle of all the excitement at the German round of the World Rallye Championship.

The fast Opel works drivers in their racy ADAM R2s and the colorful field of participants in the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup drove in front of an impressive backdrop: a total of 225,000 fans came to watch the special stages. The public’s favorite was again the legendary Panzerplatte, whose arena-like spectator area was transformed into a folk festival by about 40,000 people. The fans not only watched the gripping action of the World Rallye Championship, but also the ADAC Opel Rallye Junior team’s remarkable performance. Just like last year, the German team Marijan Griebel/Stefan Clemens and their Opel ADAM R2 captured the class victory with aplomb, leaving more powerful vehicles behind.

Opel News - Balancing act: Spectacular move by Emil Lindholm

Their Swedish teammates Emil Bergkvist/Joakim Sjöberg had to content themselves with fourth place following a number of tire defects, but this couldn’t dampen the brand-new FIA ERC Junior champions’ delight with their successful season. Especially when numerous guests surprised the successful Opel works drivers with a surprise victory party in the service park on Friday evening. “We had no idea – what a great surprise! I was really touched,” said European champion Bergkvist.

Overall, the Opel works team won all 21 special stage best times in the RC4 class with the around 190 hp ADAM R2.

Opel-News - Folk festival atmosphere: 225,000 excited spectators came to the German round of the World Rallye Championship

The young participants at the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup also demonstrated the Opel ADAM’s sporty genes with the closer-to-production versions of the popular lifestyle car. Europe’s toughest brand cup rallye also impressed racing legend Hans-Joachim “Strietzel” Stuck, who was on site in his capacity as President of Deutscher Motor Sport Bund e.V. (DMSB, Germany’s motor racing governing body): “Hats off to Opel and what it has accomplished with its promotion of young talent. This is exactly what German rallying needs.”

The excitement at the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup was also a sporting highlight of the Deutschland Rallye. With their victories in both legs – the first on Friday, the second from Saturday morning to Sunday mid-day – young German Julius Tannert and his Luxembourgish co-driver Jennifer Thielen celebrated their early title victory.

Opel News - Cool winners: Just like last year, Marijan Griebel/Stefan Clemens won their class in the ADAM R2

Opel Motorsport Director Jörg Schrott was extremely pleased with the event: “The German round of the World Rallye Championship is a highlight in Opel Motorsport’s rallye season. The backdrop was phenomenal and the atmosphere at the special stages absolutely unique. And we’re also very happy with our sporting results. Our Opel works drivers Marijan and Emil once again demonstrated the ADAM R2’s current leadership position in its class. And in the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup, Julius Tannert gave an impressive performance, deservedly winning the title. All told, it was a fantastic motorsport event where Opel played a key role.”
